How to Plan Your Instagram Feed: 5 Tips for Better Content

I personally use Instagram every single day, and it's one of my favourite forms of social media. When it was first released, Instagram was a platform for sharing photos with friends. Over the last few years, however, the platform has introduced new features that allow us to share videos, create business profiles and even shop directly through the app.

With so many opportunities to promote a business or personal brand, having a clear Instagram strategy is becoming increasingly important for businesses and influencers who want to succeed on the platform.

Planning your Instagram content in advance can help you create a more cohesive feed, stay consistent with your posts and attract new followers. Whether you're using Instagram to grow your business, promote your blog or simply share your photography, here are five tips to help you plan your Instagram feed and create content that stands out.

Planning Your Instagram Feed

1 - Think About Your Content

Before you start posting, think about the type of content you want to share. What do you want your Instagram account to be known for? What style or theme do you want to achieve?

As Instagram is a highly visual platform, it's worth taking some time to decide how you want your feed to look and feel. Having a consistent style can help your account look more professional and make it easier for people to recognise your content.

Pinterest is a great place to start when looking for Instagram content inspiration. You can create mood boards, collect photography ideas and explore colour palettes that might work well for your feed.

Another useful tip is to follow accounts that share similar content to what you want to create. Pay attention to the types of images they post, how they use colour and the way they communicate with their audience. This can help inspire your own content while allowing you to develop a style that feels unique to you.

2 - Create and Edit Your Instagram Images

Once you've decided on the style of your Instagram feed, it's time to start creating your images. Photo editing apps are a great way to give your content a consistent look without needing professional photography equipment.

Some popular apps for editing Instagram photos include VSCO, Adobe Lightroom and Snapseed. These apps allow you to adjust colours, brightness and contrast, as well as apply filters to help create a consistent aesthetic across your feed.

You can also find presets online if you want to achieve a particular colour scheme or editing style. Using similar editing techniques across your photos can help tie your Instagram feed together.

If you want to add text, graphics or other design elements to your images, Photoshop is one option. For a simpler and more affordable alternative, Canva is a fantastic tool for creating Instagram graphics, promotional posts and branded content.

The most important thing is to find an editing style that suits your content and stick with it. You don't need to make every image look identical, but having a consistent approach can help your Instagram feed feel more cohesive.

3 - Plan Your Instagram Captions Before Publishing

The story you tell on Instagram is just as important as the images or videos you post. Your captions give you an opportunity to provide context, show your personality and encourage your followers to engage with your content in the comments.

Rather than writing a caption at the last minute, try planning your Instagram captions in advance. This gives you more time to think about the message you want to communicate and how you want your audience to respond.

I personally like to write my Instagram captions in the Notes app on my phone before publishing them. This allows me to edit the wording, check for mistakes and make sure the caption complements the image.

When writing your captions, consider asking a question, sharing a personal experience or including a call to action. For example, if you're sharing a travel photo, you could ask your followers about their favourite destinations. If you're promoting a blog post, you could encourage them to visit the link in your bio to read more.

Planning your captions alongside your images can also help you maintain a consistent tone of voice across your account.

4 - Visually Plan the Order of Your Instagram Posts

One of my favourite ways to plan Instagram content is to arrange my images before publishing them. This allows you to see how your feed will look as a whole and decide which images work best next to each other.

If you're aiming for a particular Instagram aesthetic, the order of your photos can make a difference. You might want to alternate between different types of content, balance light and dark images or use a consistent colour palette throughout your feed.

Apps such as UNUM, Planoly and Mosaico are examples of tools that can help you plan the layout of your Instagram feed. They allow you to move images around and preview different arrangements before deciding which order works best.

Planning your Instagram grid in advance can be particularly useful if you're a blogger, influencer or business that wants to maintain a consistent visual identity.

However, don't feel that every image needs to match perfectly. Your feed should still reflect your personality and the content you genuinely want to share. A little planning can go a long way without making your Instagram account feel overly curated.

5 - Schedule Your Instagram Content in Advance

Scheduling your Instagram content is a great way to stay organised and maintain a consistent posting routine. Instead of having to create and publish every post on the day, you can prepare your content in advance and arrange for it to be published at a later date.

This can be particularly helpful if you want to share several posts throughout the week, plan content around important dates or make sure you have something ready to publish when you're busy.

I personally use Facebook Creator Studio to schedule my Instagram posts. At the time of writing, you need to have your Instagram account connected to a Facebook Page and set up as a business account to access the relevant publishing features.

There are also other scheduling tools available, such as Later, which can help you organise your posts and plan your content calendar. Depending on the tool and features available, you can also prepare and schedule Instagram Stories in advance.

One of the biggest benefits of scheduling content is that it frees up time for other important tasks, such as responding to comments, engaging with your followers and planning future posts.

Remember, scheduling your content doesn't mean you should disappear after publishing. Instagram is a social platform, so taking the time to interact with your audience is just as important as creating the content itself.

Final Thoughts

Planning your Instagram feed doesn't have to be complicated. By thinking about your content in advance, editing your images consistently, preparing your captions, arranging your posts and scheduling your content, you can create a more cohesive Instagram presence.

Whether you're an influencer, blogger or business owner, having a clear Instagram content strategy can help you stay organised, develop your own style and build stronger relationships with your audience.

The key is to find a planning routine that works for you. Start with these five tips, experiment with different approaches and remember to have fun creating content along the way!
